Charlotte’s Web of Words: What would you do?

Last month, we took part in an educational meet and greet for the “Florida Compassionate Medical Care Act of 2014” at our local library. The law authorizes physicians to order low THC cannabis for use by specified patients. The cannabis is converted into a medical hemp oil or cannabidiol (CBD) most popularly known as Charlotte’s Web. The resulting product has no psychoactive effect which is commonly associated with marijuana. It has shown to be extremely effective in reducing seizures.

Holley Moseley, the mom who worked tirelessly to help move the bill to passage in Florida, presented the status of the law and where it is in the process. For those who are new to the law, it was passed in July 2014 and is slated to take effect in January 2015. The law opens the door to bring a life saving option to children in Florida who have severe epilepsy causing intractable seizures. Unfortunately, the lottery system that will select nurseries in Florida to grow Charlotte’s Web is now being challenged in court. A handful of growers think the lottery system is illegal. From a business and safety perspective, I understand their concerns. Their issue focuses on making sure the product is the best it can be. But one has to wonder. Is it all about the money or bogging down the law in the courts to maintain the status quo?

My Little Professors

My Little Professors

Last week, Hailey, Livy and I went to my sister Meaghon's classroom to share a presentation about our family. Meaghon teaches 7th and 8th grade students at the Safety Harbor Montessori Academy. We agreed that this would be a wonderful opportunity for us to go in to share our experiences and to talk about Livy's Hope.

Our family has presented to elementary aged children and families of children with special needs before but we had never spoken with middle school students. We weren't quite sure what to expect. It was a learning experience for us all.

Cameras in Special Needs Classrooms

Cameras in Special Needs Classrooms

Yesterday I came across a story on ABC News by Christina NG.

It begins, "A grassroots movement to put cameras in classrooms, driven by the parents of special-needs students, is simmering across the country. It's a personal crusade for many of the parents who say their children have suffered abuse at the hands of teachers and classroom aides with unsatisfying consequences..."

Family Cafe Conference 2012 Presentation

I was finally able to finish putting the video together of our presentation at the Family Café Conference. I broke it into 4 parts since it is rather lengthy. We had a wonderful experience and met some great people. They must be great if they were willing to listen to us for an hour:) Hailey did an amazing job and was incredibly poised in front of everyone. After watching the videos, anyone familiar with the movie Monster's Inc. will understand the joke regarding Hailey and Mike Wazowski. For those of you who do not know about the Family Cafe Conference, it is an annual event held in Orlando that brings together individuals with disabilities and their families with state agencies, non-profit organizations and other service providers, so families can network with each other, learn what services are available to them, and find out the best way to go about accessing those services.

Our presentation as it appeared in the program was:
